Grain and Groove presents OSTARA

Grain and Groove, Phoebe Rose design and Studio Rosalind present Ostara: an exploration of new beginnings, spring and natures cycles through the craft of woodwork, jewellery and brass art.

Why Ostara?

Ostara is a Pagan and Wiccan festival that celebrates the arrival of the Spring equinox; it is the welcoming of the shift from dark to light.

It is a time of rebirth and fertility and this can be seen in the symbols associated with the festivities. The hare, often a nocturnal and shy creature, can be seen from February to April behaving in an erratic manner in pursuit of a breeding partner. The tulip is one of the first flowers to bloom after winter, offering a much needed pop of colour to the landscape. The egg, hens traditionally slow down or stop production of eggs in the winter due to a lack of light and warmth thus when spring arrives they begin to produce once more.

Through our chosen crafts, we’ve found ourselves become more attentive to the natural world. Each piece we produce has taken into consideration the properties and sourcing of the material.

It has given us an insight into Mother Nature’s cycles and rhythms and allows us to remove the blanket of ignorance the modern world provides.

We have enjoyed learning about the stories and symbols that people have long used to make sense of the changing seasons.

Who is involved?

Phoebe Rose Hutcheson

A multidisciplinary artist with a practice centred around slow craft, history, folklore and nature. They graduated from Leith School of Art in 2015 and went on to run a successful shop named Dahlia situated in Marchmont, South Edinburgh. The shop stocked a selection of house plants, candles, local artists prints and other thoughtfully curated gifts; during this time Phoebe started to sell her own artworks within Dahlia.

They closed their doors after a successful five year period and Phoebe moved into the world of product design. They have since been fortunate to travel to India and Morocco where they experienced working first hand with artisans collaboratively designing block print patterns, embroidery designs and more.

Expect intricately crafted metal silhouettes of Ostara symbols- both framed and hanging ornaments.
